In an industry full of egos, it’s vital one is always aware of the way they portray themselves.
Lately I have noticed a significant increase of arrogant Models and Photographers that openly rant on social networking sites about competitors in the industry. Personally, I find it not only unprofessional, but also cringe worthy. If people feel the need to take to a public domain to criticise someone else it almost reflects some sort of insecurity. For more on this subject though, read my blog https://ukmodelfolios.wordpress.com/2012/05/30/imitation-is-the-sincerest-form-of-flattery/
My otherwise main purpose for this post is to reinstate that, the photography industry is a business, not a charity. I’m becoming increasingly tired of receiving ‘stuck-up’ emails from models who despite asking US to shoot their portfolios, take umbrage to receiving a price list. There is apparently a false rumour going around that since a model is paid to do a photoshoot, they shouldn’t have to pay for a photoshoot. WRONG! If a client books a model for a job, they should pay; the terms of payment can be negotiated by the Model’s Agent or by the model directly. However, if a model wants to shoot with a specific Photographer because they want to have that Photographer’s images in their book, then expect to pay. Excluding even the Photographer’s time, there are basic costs involved with any photoshoot such as hair and make-up, for example. If a Photographer chooses to cover these costs that’s their prerogative but if they ask the model to pay and contribute towards these cost then so be it. Personally I feel if a model is offended by this then they need to get back down to Earth, and quickly.
From my perspective, UK Model Folios is an agency offering some of the finest photography services the model portfolio industry has to offer. I am therefore offended that models do not understand why they should have to pay our Photographers for their work.
When models and photographers are starting out they may arrange a test shoot to benefit both their books, for example and if pre-agreed then both may say neither has to actually pay any money.
Briefly, the same message has to go out to agencies who for some reason assume because they are a top agency, Photographers should work for cheap. Again, unless it is of any benefit for Photographers to photograph an agency’s models, agencies should be expected to pay the going rate for that Photographer and any additional crew.
And for those who still don’t get it- maybe this picture will help you understand?
As you may or may not be aware, Amy Willerton is more than just a model to us, she’s part of our UK Model Folios family. We are so proud of how she has conducted herself in the jungle thus far, despite being a victim of some clear mistreatment by other camp Members.
We met Amy through sponsoring the Miss London beauty pageant (regional heat for Miss England and Miss World). We spotted from the offset she had that certain something; the ‘X-Factor’ if you will, and we were right.
Travelling to Thailand with Amy after she won a photoshoot with us and Alan Strutt to shoot there was a real highlight. It was on those stunning beaches we shot her debut calendar and spent time really getting to know the real Amy.
Here’s some of our highlights! #TeamAmy x
